The Connecticut Times -
Democrats in Washington, DC led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) continue to delay reopening the U.S. Government. The cause of the delay is a series of demands tied to a Continuing Resolution. The Continuing Resolution (CR) is meant to extend the time the House and Senate can keep working on coming up with a budget. The CR also keeps the Government operating at current spending levels. Any other issues that either party wants can be brought up and discussed during the extension the CR allows.
Republicans and Democrats have both agreed on Continuing Resolutions in the past, as recent as last March. However, it was widely reported that Schumer was highly criticized by the extreme left of the Democrat party for voting for the CR in March. This time the Democrats added several items to the CR and will not vote for the CR as it was presented by the Republicans.
Among the items the Democrats are demanding are reinstatement of healthcare for illegal aliens and no funding for rural hospitals. Both of these are not supported by the Republicans.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has repeatedly stated that all the Democrat demands can be discussed and negotiated once the Government reopens. So far the Democrats are digging in and the Government remains closed.
